Top 500 Bars: Dry Martini Sorrento among the world's best bars
In the global Top 500 Bars ranking, Dry Martini Sorrento places 326th: one of only three Italian bars in that band.
Top 500 Bars is unlike other rankings. It is not decided by a jury sitting in a room: it comes from an algorithm, devised by Anthony Poncier, that aggregates hundreds of sources across the internet in more than twenty languages — expert opinion, platforms, search engines — and distils them into a worldwide list of five hundred cocktail bars.
In that ranking, Dry Martini Sorrento sits at number 326.
The interesting part is not the number but the company. In the band where it appears, published in July 2022, there are only three Italian bars: alongside Dry Martini are Rita's Tiki Room in Milan and Caffè Gilli in Florence. Two major cities and, precisely, Sant'Agnello.
Being the only non-metropolitan address in that group says something specific: a bar's reputation today no longer depends on standing in the centre of Milan. It is built on what you pour and on what gets told about it, and it travels on its own.
For a hotel bar looking over the Gulf of Naples, entering a global list built on data rather than on relationships is perhaps the least ceremonial and the hardest to argue with of all recognitions.
