In Gambero Rosso's Bar d'Italia 2020 guide, Dry Martini at Majestic Palace enters the list of Italy's nine best hotel cocktail bars, the year the category was created.
In 2020 Gambero Rosso's Bar d'Italia guide did something it had never done before: it created a category for the best hotel cocktail bars. Until then, hotel bars had been squeezed somewhere between breakfast service and room service, as if the counter of a hotel could not have a dignity of its own.
Nine addresses across Italy made that first selection. One of them is Dry Martini by Javier de las Muelas at Majestic Palace Hotel, across the winter main hall and the summer terrace.
Being chosen in the founding year of a category means something different from winning an established prize: it means having been one of the examples that convinced a national guide the category needed to exist at all.
Gambero Rosso's method, after all, does not reward the one-off: it assesses a venue's overall offer, its consistency over time, the quality of what is in the glass and of everything around the glass. It is a measure of solidity rather than of fashion.
